IQ Percentile Guide: What Your Score Really Means

If your report says you are in the 84th percentile, that does not mean you answered 84% of questions correctly. It means your performance ranks above 84% of a reference population used for normalization.

This is why percentile is often more meaningful than raw score. Raw score depends on that specific item set, while percentile maps your performance to a broader standardized frame.

Why Percentile and IQ Estimate Are Linked

Most IQ frameworks use a normalized distribution where the center is 100 and spread is represented by a standard deviation. As percentile rises, estimated IQ rises in a non-linear way around the tails.

For practical interpretation, percentile is usually your fastest signal of where you stand globally.

Tip: Compare progress by percentile over multiple sessions, not by raw score only.

Common Interpretation Mistakes

One common mistake is treating one online result as a clinical diagnosis. Another is comparing scores from tests with very different item quality and timing constraints.

Use online tests for directional insight, pattern detection, and training feedback loops.
